The part that fails is almost always the vapor barrier layer, the seam tape, or the mechanical fasteners holding the barrier to the wall. Sometimes the Rockwool itself gets saturated because the barrier failed and nobody noticed for two seasons.

Compatibility is straightforward but there’s one gotcha: Rockwool batts are friction-fit, and they’re slightly wider than the cavity they’re meant to fill. That’s by design. But in older West Covina homes near the Eastland Center corridor, we regularly see floor joists that aren’t a standard 16 or 24 inches on center. Somebody decades ago framed at 19 inches, or the joists have settled and shifted. If the Rockwool isn’t cut cleanly to the actual cavity width, it sags or gaps and you lose the thermal break. If your barrier has a small tear and the insulation above it is dry, a patch is reasonable. If the Rockwool itself is wet, it has to come out. Wet mineral wool never dries properly in a crawl space, and it’ll hold moisture against your floor joists until the joists start to rot. That’s a repair bill that makes encapsulation look cheap.
